The Gallery and a brief History
I opened Evans Gallery in 1990, and it has become the longest established photographic gallery in the area. Evans Gallery is located in Marathon, Texas, four doors east of the Gage Hotel, between Front Street Books and The Trans Pecos Bank. It serves to display oil paintings by Mimi Litschauer, my own work and the handmade jewelry and belts of Paul Wiggins of Terlingua.

Store hours are 10 am to 6 pm most days. I may be in town but I rarely hang out at the gallery. Usually I am working in the darkroom or shop and can be easily found. If you call ahead at 432-386-4366 or email at jameshevans@sbcglobal.net I will certainly try to meet with you. Also, right next door to the gallery is Front Street Books, 432-386-4249, someone there will let you in and they can help locate me. Marci Roberts works in the gallery and is there most of the time. She owns and operates the French Company Grocer,
432- 386-4522, around the corner from the gallery. She is usually bouncing between the two buildings.

My work has appeared in many national magazines, and is displayed in collections at The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, The Harry Ransom Center, Austin, The Beaumont Museum of Art, The Longview Museum of Fine Art, The Art Museum of South Texas, The El Paso Museum of Art, The Southwest Texas Writers and Photography Collection as well as many private collections.

Big Bend Pictures, my first book of photographs, designed and edited by D.J. Stout and Julie Savasky at Pentagram, with an introduction by writer and novelist Robert Draper was released by UT Press April 1, 2003 and is in its second printing.

What’s New

1. I just got back from the East Coast. It was a great trip. I saw Paul Caponigro, one of my true heros. I visited my brothers, saw many museum shows, and a bunch of friends. It was great.

2. If you scroll through the titles of my website, you will get a sample of shows that are available. Please call 432-386-4366 for more information.

3. I am working on a new series of images and can hardly wait to have some to post.

4. I have added new pages to the site: Panoramics, James' Rant, Quotes, and Links. On the rant page I am working on an Artist Statement.

5. "Of Missing Persons" exhibit at Jane and Jimmy Baldwin's Double J Ranch, Mineral Wells opened April 4, 2009. Call 214-926-2638 or 940-325-1813 for more information.
